Wayfinding system
The Medical Campus of the University of Augsburg is being developed in close proximity to the University Hospital Augsburg and spans 78,000 square meters of floor space, featuring modern buildings dedicated to research and teaching. Along a north-south promenade, new constructions, existing buildings, and open spaces such as the patient garden are seamlessly connected. The promenade serves as a central orientation element, providing a clear spatial structure.

The outdoor areas of the campus are designed to be accessible to students, researchers, and the general public alike. These open spaces enhance the quality of stay and encourage interaction among the various user groups.

The campus wayfinding system incorporates design elements from the University of Augsburg’s logo. The rectangular shape of the logo and the distinctive dot above the “i” influence the design language of a modular orientation system, which runs as a connecting “campus band” along the promenade. The lightweight construction of frames and accentuating circular shapes carries directional and informational elements, merging functionality with identity.

The contemporary typography is provided by the Univers Variable, which forms a lively combination with the classic Trump font. Reduced to black and white, the wayfinding system blends harmoniously with the architecture and surroundings. Pictograms, designed to be intuitive and accessible, complement the appearance of the campus. They convey openness and modernity, becoming a defining feature of the new medical faculty’s identity.
