Lecture about book “Airport Wayfinding”

SEGD – The Society for Experiential Graphic Design is a multidisciplinary organization based in the USA. For over fifty years, SEGD has been the premier resource for orientation, information and exhibition design. SEGD regularly organizes events. Heike Nehl and Sibylle Schlaich are now invited to talk about their book “Airport Wayfinding” in a webinar.

Understanding Human Flows

Moniteurs fifth Event in Venice

For their fifth event in Venice, Moniteurs invited Nicola Moczek and Riklef Rambow. Moczek and Rambow run the office PSY:Plan and are specialized in architectural and environmental psychology. Using Venice as an example, they will present psychological aspects that influence the flow of people through the city. They will talk to guests about centuries-old shipping lanes and sea marks, campaniles and towers as lighthouses, small and large squares as stages, paths and trails through a complex labyrinth. Lecture

Flow ScARf

Moniteur’s fourth event in Venice

The upcoming event in Venice will also be exciting. Feia Nehl, architect and Lele Schlaich, interface designer, will explore the flows of people created by the Aqua Alta, the annual flood in Venice. In the event, these contrasting flows are translated into a garment incorporating Augmented Reality (AR). Explore, discover and take the opportunity to take home a scarf designed exclusively for this event. Performance

Moniteurs Project: Hannover Airport

Hannover Airport undergoes comprehensive modernisation – even during ongoing operations. An integral aspect of this modernisation is the revamping of the wayfinding and orientation system, being carried out by Moniteurs. Already, the airport is incorporating the image of a departing aircraft from the pictogram family into its communication. Anticipation is in the air.

Flowing Around the World

Event in Venice

In the context of our project “People Flow, a wayfinders perspective”, we are interested in the view of architects. We could win Theo Deutinger, architect, writer and designer of socio-cultural studies for us. His lecture will focus on the last 500 years of human activity on planet Earth. We look forward to the event and a stimulating discussion with visitors. Lecture

People Flow – Wayfinder’s Perspective

Moniteurs at the Architecture Biennale

Moniteurs will present a project as part of the Time Space Existence exhibition organized by the European Cultural Center at the 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale. A three-dimensional model with video installation shows a variety of routes through a european urban transportation hub. Tying into the Biennale theme of “Laboratories of the Future,” this project opens up the conversation of whether effective wayfinding can help reduce a city’s carbon footprint. Website

Symbol Group Symposium

The Symbol Group is a new international discussion group for symbol-related topics. The goal is to promote a deeper appreciation of the symbol. The group organizes regular symposia to which specialists are invited. Sibylle Schlaich from Moniteurs spoke to the international audience in October about the challenge of creating a gender neutral pictogram for “person”.

Design Practise – Products and Interactions

Heike Nehl and Anna König teach in Dresden

The newly conceived Master’s programme “Design: Products and Interactions” at HTW Dresden dissolves the separation between product and communication design with the aim of designing modern living environments. Modules are offered in tandem by teachers with different specialisations. Heike Nehl and Anna König from Moniteurs are supporting and co-teaching this winter semester.

Brand new art space in Prague

Moniteurs designs visitor guidance system

The new Kunsthalle Praha revitalizes a former substation in the historic center of Prague. The building was largely gutted and rebuilt. Parts of the existing building have been preserved, creating an exciting spatial experience with many intermediate levels, vistas and exits for visitors. A complex task for Moniteurs. We were happy to take on the challenge. The Kunsthalle opened its doors in spring.

The BER grows …

Moniteurs continues to create orientation

Terminal building T2 has opened, adding six million passengers a year to BER’s capacity and capable of handling around 2,000 passengers during peak hours. It is the fastest-built terminal project in Germany. Moniteurs, airport wayfinding system experienced, collaborated. Architecturally, the focus is on functionality and allowed a different approach to the design of orientation.

This time the talk with lecturer Joan Zalacain developed into a lively discussion with the students about writings, project duration as well as maintenance and budget of wayfinding systems.

Project at the HBKsaar

Together with Prof. Indra Kupferschmid, Sibylle Schlaich is teaching at the Hochschule der Bildenden Künste Saar this winter semester. Signs, slips of paper, signs indicate where we are or where we should go. Already from one copy we have to think about how it looks, where it hangs, whom it should address, and where it points. How does guiding work? What are the types – and qualities – of paths? In this project, we will discuss orientation, signs and guidance systems, lend a hand ourselves and design an individual wayfinding system.

Isotype and beyond

Lecture in the Economic Museum in Vienna

The lecture by Sibylle Schlaich is about the design of a gender-neutral pictogram. A pictogram must be unambiguous. However, the more versatile the message to be communicated, the more difficult it is to design. The necessary abstraction may neglect important distinguishing features. In fact, some pictograms do not distill the essentials, but seek their uniqueness based on non-essential externals. A gender-neutral pictogram is a contradiction in terms.
