Berlin is short of foot­bridges and yet has so many rivers and other in­ter­est­ing sites that are cry­ing out for a bridge. Work­ing with the Berlin Bridge De­part­ment the In­sti­tute of Con­cep­tual and Struc­tural De­sign at the TU Berlin, we have iden­ti­fied six cen­tral lo­ca­tions that are typ­i­cal of Berlin, and where foot­bridges are needed. So be­gan the “World’s Foot­bridges for Berlin” pro­ject. Par­tic­i­pants from all over the world sub­mit­ted many cu­ri­ous, in­tel­li­gent, vi­sion­ary foot­bridge de­signs. The pre­cious col­lec­tion of 73 se­lected bridge de­signs are mapped in the mi­crosite “Bridge Finder”, a dig­i­tal com­pass to ex­plore the con­text of the pro­ject and the city. The “Bridge Finder” first shows the near­est lo­ca­tion and then all other lo­ca­tions with in­for­ma­tion on walk­ing dis­tances. It in­forms the user of the re­spec­tive bridge de­sign and in­vites the user to go for a stroll.

Moni­teurs de­signed the first iBook of the en­gi­neer­ing con­sul­tants schlaich berg­er­mann part­ner with the is­sue “move­able struc­tures”. The dig­i­tal medium pre­sents highly com­plex pro­jects, like the three-span fold­ing bridge Kieler Hörn or the BC Place Sta­dium in Van­cou­ver, in a vi­talised way with films, slideshows, im­ages, text and mu­sic. The styl­ish book in­cludes ten in­for­mal in­ter­views with the as­so­ci­ates, who talk about the for­ward-look­ing tech­nol­ogy and in­ven­tive ge­nius be­hind the pro­jects.

One of the most renowned Ger­man or­a­to­rio choirs has a new in­ter­net pres­ence: the web­site, cre­ated af­ter the cor­po­rate de­sign de­vel­oped by Moni­teurs, gives vi­sual, his­tor­i­cal and acoustic in­sights into the work of the tra­di­tion-rich choir. Large-for­mat im­ages, in­tense colours and ty­pog­ra­phy as a cen­tral de­sign el­e­ment con­vey not only the con­tem­po­rary rel­e­vance of the work, but also the power, live­li­ness and va­ri­ety of the choir.

The site is run through a con­tent-man­age­ment sys­tem. A lot of ed­i­to­r­ial con­tent, such as news or fu­ture con­certs, en­sured that our mis­sion was not only to adapt the sys­tem to the vis­i­tors, but also to the needs of the choir mem­bers. An in­te­grated pro­tected area for or­gan­is­ing the choir – for ex­am­ple, the plan­ning of re­hearsals, the cre­ation of sur­veys or the shar­ing of in­ter­nal pic­ture gal­leries – meets these de­mands.

Within the vi­sual con­cept for the in­ter­na­tional en­gi­neer­ing con­sul­tants schlaich berg­er­mann part­ner, words like con­struc­tion and com­plex­ity ver­sus sim­plic­ity are el­e­men­tary. The logo rep­re­sents schlaich berg­er­mann part­ner clearly, mem­o­rably and with con­fi­dence. The logo, three geo­met­ri­cally con­structed and char­ac­ter­is­tic let­ters, makes a bold state­ment. The name, along with its ab­bre­vi­a­tion, uniquely moulds the brand.
The en­ergy in the de­sign of the pre­sent logo ra­di­ates light­ness, vi­sion, pre­ci­sion and tech­nol­ogy, in both ana­logue and dig­i­tal forms. The logo will pre­serve its style, as it is no longer tied to the text. The swing of the let­ters is free and grace­ful. Logo – word mark and let­ter­ing, mo­men­tum, text and colour to­gether cre­ate the new cor­po­rate de­sign.

The de­sign of the book in many lay­ers, goes hand in hand with the con­tent, which de­scribes the many dif­fer­ent lay­ers with which the en­gi­neers schlaich berg­er­mann part­ner deal and in which they work.

How do the en­gi­neers al­ways man­age to de­liver in­no­v­a­tive and first-class work? A look be­hind the scenes de­scribes this. In ad­di­tion to ex­cit­ing texts and pro­ject de­scrip­tions, the book also pro­vides space for beau­ti­ful, quiet photo se­ries. What it means when en­gi­neers work to­gether with artists is shown in the layer art, for ex­am­ple. Nu­mer­ous works are vividly ex­plored in depth about Aug­mented Re­al­ity.

The ex­hi­bi­tion “High En­ergy – En­gi­neer Build­ing Cul­ture“ pre­sents the works of en­gi­neers Jörg Schlaich and Rudolf Berg­er­mann from al­most 40 years of prac­tice. The three key top­ics of the ex­hi­bi­tion are: con­struc­tion and art, con­struc­tion and so­ci­ety, con­struc­tion and ecol­ogy. Moni­teurs de­signed the con­cept and graph­ics of the ex­hi­bi­tion. Nu­mer­ous pro­ject ex­am­ples are shown on work­ing benches and archive ta­bles and on ex­tend­able graphic pan­els, giv­ing the viewer an un­der­stand­ing of the ground­break­ing ap­proach and the work­ings of the two en­gi­neers.

The world renowned en­gi­neer­ing of­fice schlaich berg­er­mann part­ner has pub­lished a se­ries of top­i­cal mag­a­zines. The first is­sue high­lights their work on top­ics re­lated to the sun. Since the 1970s, the of­fice has worked in this field with tech­no­log­i­cal con­cepts, and op­er­ates in an ad­vi­sory ca­pac­ity and as pro­ject man­ager.
