This summer semester, Moniteurs has been invited to create an interdisciplinary course at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts. In the module “Wayfinding 21”, Heike Nehl will deal with the basics of wayfinding and develop concepts for orientation in space with the students. In addition to analysis, design with brands, signs, pictograms and typography, structural elements or digital products can be created. This is a topic that takes students from all disciplines with them, from design to information technology.
Built in 1969, the Hyparschale on the banks of the Elbe in Magdeburg is one of around fifty shell buildings by Ulrich Müther still standing. After 20 years of vacancy, the Hyparschale is to once again become a center of attraction for the people of Magdeburg. In 2021, the renovation will begin according to the design of gmp Architekten, complemented by a contemporary guidance system designed by Moniteurs. Visualization: gmp Architekten
We are part of the team led by New York-based civil engineering firm sbp and architecture firm PAU that competed alongside 33 design teams. The US “16 Tech Community Corporation“ favored our team. In addition to a bridge that connects the newly emerging “16 Tech Innovation District“ with the nationally important research location of Indianapolis, the development of a path and guidance concept for the entire district is also commissioned.
In an iBook we present our guidance system project for the airport Berlin Brandenburg. Four chapters explain how the guidance system was developed and how it shapes the architectural identity of the airport. We brought it up to date for the opening of the airport. Berlin Brandenburg Airport will open its doors on 31.10 and with it our wayfinding system will also be launched. A project that has always presented us with new challenges! The wayfinding system was already implemented in 2015 at Schoenefeld Airport, which has been part of BER as Terminal 5 since this week. Now it is finally being put into operation in the new building, at Terminal 1. We are delighted. > Insight
Schönefeld Airport will become part of Berlin Brandenburg Airport on 31.10. and will then be called Terminal 5. The terminal name is already in place. The guidance system was originally planned for one terminal, but today it connects three terminals: Terminal 1, Terminal 2 and Terminal 5. Combining function with identity, the wayfinding system forms a design bracket for the entire BER-Campus.
The airport has its dress rehearsal and is being tested with the help of the ORAT program. The program is an internationally established standard for the commissioning of airports. 800 to 1000 participants help to simulate and thus test the airport operation. The wayfinding system of Moniteurs is also put to the test. Does everyone find their way? We are still making final optimizations – everything should run smoothly for the opening on October 31, 2020.
Our work takes us to the Czech Republic. In a former Zenger substation an industrial monument from the 1930s in the historical centre of Prague, the Kunsthalle Praha is being created as a space for Czech and international modern and contemporary art. Moniteurs is designing the visitor wayfinding system and we are pleased to be working on another project with Axel Kufus and OH Studio.
Directly in the neighbourhood of the Aufbau Haus in Berlin-Kreuzberg, an business courtyard for the work of tomorrow is being built. THE GRID, designed by Eike Becker Architects, offers 32 commercial units on five floors, as well as an inviting, green inner courtyard. The various energy supply companies in Saxony are planning a head office in Dresden, which is intended to promote a common and modern corporate culture. An existing building will be supplemented by a new building designed by the architects von Gerkan, Marg und Partner. The pictogram study by Moniteurs, which was already presented at the Information+ Conference in 2018, has been published in the Information Design Journal (IDJ). The study shows how difficult the perception of the two pictograms "elevator" and "toilet" is and why they are often confused. The wayfinding system for the Kunsthalle Mannheim wins gold at the European Design Award. Sibylle Schlaich and Anne von Borries personally accepted the award at the gala in Warsaw. With over 300 million visitors annually, Messe Berlin is one of the world's 10 largest trade fair companies. Grown over a century, with 26 hall complexes it was time for a new modern orientation and guidance system, analog and digital. Moniteurs won the bid to win the competition and is now working on the overall concept for Messe Berlin.
In the Gardens of the World, a Jewish Garden will be realized from October 2019. With this, all major world religions will be represented. Grün Berlin has announced a competition for the garden design and on October 14, the accompanying exhibition to the competition was opened. The exhibition, designed as a traveling exhibition, was conceived and designed by Moniteurs. Already in 2017, Moniteurs designed and implemented an extensive exhibition in the new visitor center to the existing gardens.

International airport and aviation experts provide insights into their projects at the SMART AIRPORTS conference in Singapore. It takes place at the South East Asia Airport Fair. C1 TOMORROW at Potsdamer Platz opens its doors to all visitors. The building planned by Renzo Piano in 1993-1997 is being refurbished by Baumgarten Simon Architekten. The ground floor invites in the future as a sort of marketplace with cafes and food stalls to linger. The four orientations of the building to the north, south, east and west are reflected in the redesigned orientation system of Moniteurs. Constructed words and pictograms.
What a nice coincidence! We approached this project from two sides. Moniteurs developed the wayfinding system for the new Kunsthalle Mannheim and designed the poster for the film “Years of Construction“ by Heinz Emigholz, a long-term film portrait of the Kunsthalle Mannheim. The film will be shown at the 69th Berlinale. Moniteurs teamed up with Iabsis and Fraport to create a new service for booking a time slot at security. Test run for 1500 flights within europe was open till December 20th.
In close collaboration with Almut Grüntuch-Ernst, architect and director of the “Institute for Design and Architectural Strategies”, the book Hortitecture designed by Moniteurs. Architecture and plants - how can you reconcile these apparent contradictions to plan cities closer to nature in the future? Hortitecture documents projects, ideas and experiences of 33 international experts who have exchanged symposia at the TU Braunschweig.
The biennial international conference brings together researchers and practitioners of information design and visualization to discuss common issues and challenges. Sibylle Schlaich and Anita Meier give a lecture on public pictograms and their trends for the future. In the form of lectures, round tables and conferences, various aspects of the topic “museum” are discussed. The aim of the Orange Ocean initiative is to raise awareness of marine litter caused by plastic. Orange Ocean connects stakeholders from industry, green tech, research and NGOs and sets up a media forum covering all relevant issues relating to the protection of the oceans in order to provide consumers with the best possible information. Therefore, as part of the UN World Oceans Day 2019 on June 8, a global TV and social media event will take place. The pollution of the oceans by plastic waste is a threat that concerns all of us. Design Talks Business is a space in which architects, entrepreneurs, strategists, managers and designers meet and bordly go beyond the limits of today's solutions. The increasing role of design in business and the potential of the dynamically changing man of the Anthropocene era is one of many points of contact for business and design. For this reason, 300 participants will meet on 13 and 14 July 2018 at the Gdynia Design Days Festival in Poland. On 3 May, our client Merck celebrated its 350-year history with 900 guests and the official opening of the new Innovation Center. The leading science and technology company has embarked on a new path. The Innovation Center, a central building with further modern buildings creating an innovative working environment for over 10,000 employees. Moniteurs was able to assert itself in a competition run by Doctors Without Borders throughout Germany. Since 2000, we have been cooperating intensively and confidently with Doctors Without Borders. Now it is important to sharpen the corporate design developed by Moniteurs to target specific groups and to live the brand in the digital transformation. We are happy about the common view ahead and the coming cooperation.
How can a message be conveyed with signs without language and text? Sibylle Schlaich teaches again at the Institute of Design. Pictograms are not only applied to the finished structure, but also help in the planning phases to communicate and present functions or processes. The students explore what pictorial signs convey alongside the content: an identity, belonging to a building, a company, a time or even a country.
The final totem of the orientation and signage system has been installed and stands at the access road to the Carmen Würth Forum, the congress and cultural centre built by Chipperfield Architects, directly opposite the company headquarters of Adolf Würth GmbH & Co. KG. In contrast to the signage system found across the open spaces of the company headquarters, this totem’s header prominently features an illuminated logo of the Carmen Würth Forum. > Project
Heike Nehl and Anna König von Moniteurs with Sveta Goldstein and Tobias Kuster from Geneva form one of eight teams that will participate in the Hackathon - a collaborative software and hardware development event. This event will be hosted by Vitra (Swiss designer furniture manufacturer), supported by Frame Magazine. Investigating our needs for living and working environments, technologies, and the interface between them, participants will aim to find answers to the question which objects and spaces will survive in a hyper-connectible future – and why.
Also this year, the Filmgalerie 451 is represented with a documentary by Heinz Emigholz at the Berlinale. "Two Basilicas" is a confrontation and juxtaposition of two churches. Stefan Kanter from Moniteurs designed the poster, which is already the thirteenth in this series. On December 18, Mannheim celebrated the handover of the new Kunsthalle to the city. Only briefly was it open and many interested came. The building designed by gmp-Architekten, Interior by Axel Kufus with OHstudio and the wayfinding system designed and planned by Moniteurs! The house will finally open on 1 June 2018.
Since its founding in 1996, the Annual Multimedia Award has demonstrated the vibrancy of digital brand communication. Moniteurs won with the microsite "Bridge Finder", designed and developed for the Footbridge conference. Anita Meier of Moniteurs was invited to the Department of Typography and Communication at University of Reading in England. For a day, the students learnt about multisensory wayfinding and smellscapes, and they also had a go at doing a smell map of the campus.
Sibylle Schlaich will once again be giving a seminar on signs and their non-verbal communication at the Institute of Design. Using examples, possible applications are investigated, researched in buildings and urban space. In addition to presentation and drawing style analysis, pictograms are designed and drawn by the students.

On September 6th it starts and the preparations for the conference go full-speed. Posters and wayfinding are hang up, the website has grown. In the run-up, participants from all over the world have introduced ideas for new pedestrian bridges in Berlin, city of water. This precious collection of 73 selected bridge designs is published in a book, designed by Moniteurs. On April, 13th the International Garden Exhibition Berlin will open. The new visitor centre will welcome visitors with the exhibition "Gardens of the World“. Exhibition subjects include, among others, ten themed gardens and nine international contemporary gardens. 10 years ago, UNESCO named Berlin the "City of Design". Robert Eysoldt and Raban Ruddigkeit used the 10th jubilee to publish the book "Berlin Design Digest" which presents a collection of 100 successful and internationally relevant projects realized by design agencies based in Berlin. Summer term 2017 at the university hannover – Institute for art and design. Sibylle Schlaich sets the subject “reading places” for the students. The group will explore, analyze and evaluate places in Hannover. The target will be to appraise and to encroach on the phenomenon.
With the new building and reconstruction of the Charité in Berlin-Mitte an extension of the wayfinding system was required. Firstly Moniteurs has been commissioned to develop an analyse-report, followed by the facade application for the rescue center, the development of an entire new pictogram family, wayfinding signage in the foyer and elevator vestibules of the 21 levels tower building, including wall application. > Project

Mannheim has a new art gallery. The architectonic idea of the city within the city needs to be realized with the new building. The architects are gmp - Architekten von Gerkan, Marg und Partner. To change the structural corporate design, the foundation held a competition, selecting the team of Axel Kufus and Moniteurs. In a report at the FH Vorarlberg in Austria, Heike Nehl presents the creative work in developing a wayfinding system and reconsider the W-questions: who, where, why and whereto? How does the interaction of analog and digital media changes the perception? Sign is a sign is a sign – each sign is a part of a system and all together they build a communication chain – what is all behind?
What is exciting about wayfinding, about installing graphical messages in space, so that people follow them? How is signage connected with other media, for example with digital media? Sibylle Schlaich, founder and managing director of Moniteurs Kommunikationsdesign GmbH, has designed and implemetend wayfinding systems for the last fifteen years. At the Goethe Institut in Krakow she will present Moniteurs current work.
This spring Heike Nehl and Sibylle Schlaich are again invited as guest professors in China at the CDK (the Chinese German Art Academy in Hangzhou). Since 10 years the CDK is the cooperation partner university of the UdK Berlin. This year the subject for the student will be “space and identity”.

“Signs and Pictograms” are centered in a Workshop at the architecture department of the University of Applied Science in Saarbrücken. Sibylle Schlaich from Moniteurs is bringing the subject and is holding the workshop at the 24th of february.
121 Offices applied for the open and international advertised architecture and design competition. Gerber Architects with Moniteurs reached the second and last stage with three other applicants. Moniteurs developed, connecting to the architecture, the signage concept for the Terekhovo Station in Moskow.
On the occasion of planing a new study course with a digital focus, the design department organised on february the 10th a panel discussion with the subject “designing the digital future”. One of several speakers on podium is Heike Nehl from Moniteurs.

For our last relaunch, we asked Alexander Branczyk to provide us with a new, very light version of our corporate font “Monico”, which he originally designed in 1994. Together with Georg Seifert, he expanded the font family, which is now presented in the type book from Slanted.
In October, the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research opened, where over 200 scientists from all over the world now conduct their research. Moniteurs adopted the colour concept of the architecture and the coding of the three components with different bright colours in the orientation system, and reinforced it through associative terms. > Project
Entry into the Aufbau Haus 84, designed by Barkow Leibinger, mediates between the historic Elsnerhaus (1914) and the first construction phase Aufbau Haus 85. Moniteurs continued the concept developed for Haus 85, so that both buildings are connected by the same orientation system.
Moniteurs, accompanied by PSY:PLAN, has been commissioned by the city of Berlin, to analyse the tourist wayfinding systems of ten major national and international cities. The task is to evaluate how these wayfinding concepts are applicable to a future system in Berlin. Dresden, Potsdam, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Bristol, London, New York, Sydney, Wien und Zürich will be analysed.
The Upper West, consisting of a 118m high tower and a building complex directly on Breitscheidtplatz in Berlin, is one of the biggest buildings in City West and breaks new ground. With a total surface area of 53,000 square metres, there will be, as of 2016, retail spaces, offices and to date the largest hotel in the Motel One group. Moniteurs designed a concept which encompasses both the representation of the tenants in the various buildings and the orientation in the tower and the complex.
In 2017, GrünBerlin, in cooperation with the IGA, will host the Internationale Gartenausstellung (International Garden Show) in a 100 hectare area at the “Gärten der Welt” (Gardens of the World) and at Kienberg Park. Moniteurs could qualify for the tender of the outline planning of the orientation and information concept for Gärten der Welt/IGA Berlin 2017.
Moniteurs has won the competition to design a new orientation system for the Deutsche Museum Munich. In single construction stages the museum will be extensively modernized and restructured until 2025. For Moniteurs the core of the task is the development of a signage concept for the inner and outdoor areas with the focus on the collection building and the museum island.
Moniteurs has been commissioned by Gerber Architects International to develop the orientation system for a metro station in Riyadh. The Architects are one of the winner, beside Snøhetta and Zaha Hadid Architects, of the invited international competition of the High Commission for the Development of Arriyadh. The signageincludes the Olaya Parc, the exterior of the statio, public and non-public areas, shopping and retail area and the underground parking. Visualisation: Gerber Architects international
The city quarter DomAquarée, with a total rentable space of 71,000m², lies in the historical centre of Berlin, opposite the Berlin Cathedral. In addition to many shops and a multitude of restaurants, one can find apartments, flexible office spaces and a four-star hotel. Moniteurs has been commissioned by Bilfinger Real Estate to design a new orientation system for the outdoor area.
Carlswerk is an industrial complex with a one hundred year history, and at approximately 126,000m², the largest urban industrial campus in Cologne. Cultural institutions, restaurants, offices and production facilities have made the former industrial site their home, turning it into a vibrant, lively city quarter. The new building for the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research is located at Telegrafenberg in Potsdam, a site of great historical and international significance. The building was designed by the architectural firm BHBVT, while Moniteurs designed the orientation system and strengthened the visual identity of this striking building. Moniteurs has won the international competition, open by invitation, to design a new orientation system for the entire area of the BMW Research and Innovation Centre in Munich. Moniteurs has now been commissioned to develop a master concept 2050 for analogue and digital wayfinding. The pleasant highlight of the winter semester 2014/15 was the degree-show of the University Bielefeld/Design department. The concept for a new corporate design and a digital guide as a webapp were developed and designed by a team of students, taught and supported by Heike Nehl.
Moniteurs wins silver in the category "Healthcare" with "Doctors without Borders" and bronze in the catagory "Wayshowing" with the Signage project for the DGUV. The International Institute for Information Design (IIID) is a global network of individuals and organisations who are interested in optimizing information and information systems for knowledge transfer in everyday life.
Heike Nehl and Sibylle Schlaich have been invited to talk at Haus Wellensiek in Bielefeld on the 11th of February. They will be asking the following questions: how does digital media support orientation and what role does analogue information play in the orientation systems of spaces? How can both worlds compliment each other? Through their work with orientation systems, the design office wishes to show how rapidly change has been accomplished, not least in the mind of the visitor/user.
The jury has awarded second place to the design by kadawittfeldarchitektur and Moniteurs. The requirement was to develop a structural corporate design for the representation of the Federal Republic of Germany abroad. “The discovery of lightness” formed the basis of the concept. The new offices were designed to be light, open, friendly and trustworthy like the society they represent. The elegant corporate design should convey a positive, future-looking impression abroad.
The Association of German Architects (BDA) wishes to redevelop and improve its internet presence. Suitable applicants were invited to compete in a closed competition. The pitch by Moniteurs, together with null2, was the winner.
Moniteurs designed the communication media for the colloquium "Constructive engineering" at the Institute of Construction Engineering of the TU Berlin. The series of lectures picks up the latest, important and most interesting issues, for example the culture of bridge building in Berlin. Engineers from planning offices, administrations, building enterprises and students shall discuss and brought together.
Every winter semester at the Hochschule Schwäbisch Gmünd is held a so called "laboratory week". Students work in interdisciplinary workshops together. Sibylle Schlaich has been invited to hold an workshop about Orientation and Signage. Different signages should be developed, either digital or analog. Anything goes. Which most interesting, beautiful or directly way hits the mark.
From the 20th of October, the DGUV (Deutsche Gesetzliche Unfallversicherung) will have a new headquarters. Moniteurs designed the orientation system for the new building, located on the corner of Glinkastraße and Französische Straße. The building was designed by Grüntuch Ernst Architects and contains conference rooms, reception area, office spaces and an underground car park.
The first iBook of the engineering consultants schlaich bergermann and partner, designed by Moniteurs, will be launched on the 20th of October. The digital medium presents the highly complex projects with the issue “moveable structures” with films, slideshows, many images, text and music in a vitalized way.
Within the scope of the project “Westfalenhalle Signage” supervised by Professor Martin Middelhauve, Lars Harmsen and Alexander Branczyk, Sibylle Schlaich has given a talk about "Orientation and Identity" at the FH Dortmund.
Heike Nehl is teaching Interaction design at the Fachhochschule Bielefeld this winter semester. Her project “Digital Orientation” addresses to design students and students of new media informatics of the University Bielefeld. “VisionPlus Vienna: transforming information” is a conference, organized by the International Institute for Information Design (IIID), to examine the role of the Isotype transformer 90 years on. The venue is dedicated to Marie Neurath. Much of her early work for the Gesellschafts- und Wirtschaftsmuseum was pathbreaking. Siyblle Schlaich und Heike Nehl are invited to join the conference as speakers.
The beginning of June will see the 15th “Children and Youth Welfare Day”, with Berlin as this year’s host city. The event will take place in a dedicated area of 1,300 square metres, supported by the 12 districts of Berlin and sponsors. Moniteurs is in charge of the exhibition design, while xplicit has designed the exhibition graphics for over 50 participants. Moniteurs is to be a guest at “Wednesday Seminars” at the university of Design Schwäbish Gmünd on the issue “communication in space”. Experts from the fields of design, art and culture, science and industry are invited to speak on current topics in their respective fields.
Sibylle Schlaich has been invited by Professor Skopec to speak at “Beziehungsweisen” (“Making Connections”) in the class of Visual Systems. She will talk primarily about the design process with respect to large projects, and on the topic of orientation systems.
Right in the centre of Berlin, on the corner of Französische Straße and Glinkastraße, the Deutsche Gesetzliche Unfallversicherung, the DGUV (German Social Insurance Organisation) is under construction. The administration building, designed by Grüntuch Ernst Architects, has been awarded the Gold Certificate from the German Sustainable Building Council. The historical Palace of Culture in Dresden, a national heritage site, will be renovated by the architects von Gerkan, Marg and partners. Moniteurs has designed the orientation system, commissioned by Kommunale Immobelien Dresden. After the successful book on orientation systems by Per Mollerup was published at the end of last year, there is now a second book on the topic, completely revised and with a greater practical section. It will mainly cover orientation systems for major projects and public spaces. The orientation system for the Berlin Brandenburg Airport by Moniteurs is also among the selected works covered.

Moniteurs to visit WEISSRAUM (Whiteroom), a forum for visual design in Innsbruck. WEISSRAUM is an initiative for those who are more graphically aware and for those concerned with shape and form. Well-known designers from all over the world will give presentations and run workshops and on the 1st of April, Moniteurs has been invited to give its own presentation.
The Märkische Quarter in Berlin is a metropolitan area of 3.2 square kilometres with nearly 40,000 residents, the orientation of which is not easy. The district office of Berlin Reineckendorf recently held a competition to redesign the orientation system, which Moniteurs won in 2013, and the firm, accompanied by the environmental psychologists from PSY:PLAN, will be working on a new concept. PSY:PLAN will research and consult for the project in the fields of architecture and the psychology of perception. Moniteurs already worked intensely in this area in 2006, developing an orientation system for several residential buildings for the organisation Gesobau. > Project
Type Talk, on the 28th of November at 6:30pm with Heike Nehl and Sibylle Schlaich, on the visual identity of the Berlin Brandenburg Airport, which has not yet opened: the orientation system, closely connected to the corporate design elements, and with its own font, has long made headlines in the international design scene. Organised by Jürgen Siebert, the free “Type Talk” series takes place monthly in the Apple Store on Kurfürstendamm.
“Fontwalk” wins “Gold” at this year’s Annual Multimedia Award. Since 1996, the competition has shone a spotlight on outstanding work in the digital domain. Moniteurs developed the microsite “Fontwalk” for Fontshop, which showcases the latest fonts and trends in the world of typefaces. At “Fontwalk”, the user is guided on a journey through the fonts, where moving pictures illustrate the history of each font while simultaneously highlighting its unique qualities and features. > To the project
This Autumn, Sibylle Schlaich and Heike Nehl are guest professors in China at the Chinesisch Deutschen Kunstakademie (Chinese German Academy of the Arts) in Hangzhou. A cooperation project between the UdK Berlin (Berlin University of the Arts) and the CAA (Chinese Art Academy), their work concerns the subject of airports and new creative approaches to vastly different fields of design. Their lectures will include all communication media employed at an airport, infographics, orientation systems, the corporate design of an airport, the corporate design of an airline, digital media such as apps, infographics on the airfield and the graphical use of space.
“1 : 1 – Signage, Orientation, Identity” is a special book. It not only describes the projects of the last ten years and the way of working of the communications design company Moniteurs, but the projects are also graphically brought into focus: in this way the book shows Moniteurs’ orientation systems on a 1 : 1 scale.
